What does an FNB personal loan cost?
What FNB’s page shows
- Interest rate: fixed and personal to you. 15.15% to 28.00% a year for long-term loans.
- Initiation fee: once-off, up to R1,207.50.

One example from FNB
Borrow R30,000 over 24 months at 18% a year. FNB’s estimated repayment is R1,796 a month, which it says includes all service and initiation fees.
That is FNB’s example, not a quote. Your amount, term and rate depend on your credit profile and what you can afford.
Ask FNB for a full quote before you accept. Check that it shows:
- The interest rate and the repayment term.
- The monthly instalment.
- The insurance premium.
- The total you will repay.
By law, interest on new personal loans is capped at the repo rate plus 21 percentage points. Since 25 September 2026 that is 28.25% a year. FNB’s page still shows 28.00% as its maximum.
What documents do I need?
Tap the one that fits you:
If you bank with FNB
FNB says you need no documents, as long as your details are up to date:
- Your South African green barcoded ID or smart ID card is on file.
- Stable income has been paid into your FNB account for at least 3 months.
- Your proof of residence is not older than 3 months.
If your income changes, FNB may ask for your latest 3 months of proof of income.
If you do not bank with FNB
- Your South African green barcoded ID book or smart ID card.
- Proof of residence not older than 3 months.
- Proof of income: your latest 3 months of payslips, or 3 months of bank statements. If you are self-employed, FNB’s page lists the proof of income it accepts, including 3 months of bank statements.

What is the January payment break?
FNB calls it “Take-a-break in January”. If your loan is eligible, you can skip your January repayment.
FNB says it applies only if:
- Your repayment term is more than 6 months.
- You are up to date with your monthly repayments.
You can also choose to pay in January and settle your loan sooner. FNB says this can save interest. FNB says terms, conditions and rules apply, so read your credit agreement.
Can I pay extra or settle early?
Yes. FNB says it will not charge penalties if you settle your loan early. You can pay extra into your loan account at any time. FNB says this helps you pay it off sooner and pay less interest.
What does the insurance cover?
FNB says credit insurance is mandatory when you repay a long-term loan. Its Customer Protection Plan covers:
- Your death.
- Permanent or temporary disability.
- Retrenchment.
- Inability to earn an income.
You can instead cede a suitable credit life insurance policy of your own, if you prefer. Read the insurance terms in your loan agreement.
Already have an FNB personal loan? Top-up
FNB says you can top up an existing FNB personal loan instead of taking a new one. You can access additional funds up to R450,000.
What FNB says you save:
- You avoid paying another initiation fee of up to R1,207.50.
- You pay one R69 monthly fee instead of two.
- FNB says the saving is between R69 and R4,554, depending on when in your loan term you top up.
Check your credit report first
FNB says you can get a free credit report once a year from any of the major credit bureaus in South Africa: XDS, Experian, CompuScan, TransUnion and Consumer Profile Bureau.
FNB says the bank looks at your income, your employment history and how you have been paying your bills. It says it has checks in place so it does not lend you more than you can afford to repay.
Watch out for
- Your repayment is fixed. It stays the same even if your income drops, so make sure it fits your tightest month.
- Credit life insurance is mandatory and adds to your monthly cost.
- The rate range is a range. Your rate is set after the bank checks your credit and affordability.
- FNB’s page gives two different term limits: fixed repayments of up to 72 months, and 1 to 66 months in the long-term rate range. Your quote shows your exact term.
- FNB also offers short-term loans of 1 to 6 months with interest of up to 5% a month. This page is about the long-term personal loan only.
- The January break has conditions and is not automatic.

FNB says you can:
